On queries that trigger an AI Overview, Google answers above the organic results and cites a handful of sources. Users read the answer and often never scroll, so a page can rank #1 organically and still lose the click to the Overview's cited sources. Tracking whether you're in that source list is now as important as tracking your rank.
AI Overviews source from Google's index, so you can't be cited unless you rank, but ranking is not enough. Google's reranker picks pages that answer the question directly in the first 200 words, carry FAQ or Article schema, and read as citation-worthy fact. You can rank fourth organically and be cited first in the Overview, or vice versa. This tracker measures the citation, not the rank.
The same query can show a different Overview, different citation counts, and different cited domains week to week. A one-time check is a snapshot; the value is trending your citation share over time so you can see whether new content is winning Overviews and which competitors keep taking the sources you want.
